If I Could Reach You

I just found one of my favorite 5th Dimension songs on you tube and had to put it on my blog! I haven't heard this song in a very long time! I had this album on 8 track when I was a teenager! Boy, that will date me! Huh! Anyway, my brother Steven had an 8 track player rigged up in his room to speakers and I would go in and put this song on and listen to it. I would lay on the floor near the speakers so I could be right in with it! I loved the piano part and also Marilyn McCoo's voice on this song! I also had an 8 track player in my little green gremlin car that was my first car that I bought myself. But it never sounded as good as it did coming from the speakers. I don't know whatever happened to that player and that tape. Lost and gone forever I guess. Like a lot of the things we collect and then get rid of during our lives! That's the cool thing about the computer age we live in now!
One of the 8 tracks that Steven had was Simon and Garfunkel. I loved that tape! He had an 8 track in his black mustang and I remember going somewhere with him and listening to them. It was so way cool! Ha Ha
He would play it in his room with the speakers also. I loved it! And now we can put all the music we want to hear on a little hand held Ipod and take it wherever we go and listen with our little ear bud ear phones! Its so amazing! And I am going to end this now because it is making me sound old and I am not! So there! Put that in your book!

Law #4 Ice Cream

Yummy! Yummy ooeey gooey bowl of Ice Cream dripping with Chocolate fudge topped with lovely white whipping cream with a nice red maraschino cherry perched on the top! Okay you can forget the cherry! I hate maraschino cherries!! I always give mine to hubby or it conveniently falls off. I must admit that it has been quite a long time since I have indulged. At least with the chocolate fudge and whipped cream. I still have the ice cream now and again only because I love it! Especially the vanilla persuasions! Vanilla Bean, French Vanilla and plain Vanilla are my favs! And why has it been a while, you ask? I am sure you know! No. 4-THERE SHOULD BE A LAW AGAINST ICE CREAM AND CHOCOLATE MAKING YOU FAT!

I remember as a child we were all sitting around eating Ice Cream. The older siblings were at the larger table in the dining room and the younger ones at the card table in the kitchen. Those of us at the card table decided it would be cool to stir the ice cream and make it creamier! So we proceeded to stir! It was vanilla ice cream! We were into the stirring when all of a sudden - “Stop stirring your ice cream!!” Our spoons immediately stopped! But it didn’t matter. The ice cream was nice and smooth and creamy! Now, every time I eat ice cream and have the urge to stir I think of my dad yelling at us to stop. I think it was nice of him to wait to yell until it had become the perfect consistency!

It seems to me that as a child, eating ice cream and chocolate didn’t have the same effect on the body as it does as an adult. Maybe it was because we didn’t have it all that often or maybe it was because we were more active as children. We did not eat out very often at all and mother always made a point of feeding us as nutritiously as she could with what we had. It wasn’t until I became an adult and was in control of my own choices as far as food that the pounds began to add up! I remember when we had returned to Salt Lake after Bruce graduated from Southern Utah we were living with his Dad for a while. This was a difficult time as Bruce was searching for an accounting job and was not having much success and living with parents when you are married is always a difficult thing. I can’t remember who came up with this but we discovered that cooked chocolate Malt O Meal cereal topped with vanilla ice cream was the thing to do! It was so delicious!! I am afraid I indulged in this treat a little too often! And it wasn’t just for breakfast! So yummy!!

Then came the invention of Magic Shell topping for ice cream! Put it on the ice cream and it hardens up! So good! The first time Bruce’s dad bought some he put it in the fridge! Needless to say it became hard in the bottle. We laughed! Reese’s Peanut butter Magic Shell on Vanilla Bean Ice Cream! Love it!!

Law # 3 Winter

Last month I went with two of my groovy (that’ll date me ha ha) sisters, Kathie and Sharlene, up to see my oldest groovy sister, Carma Lee in Jackson Hole WY. It was a great time and I couldn’t get over how beautiful it was up there! After feeling trapped in this house and closed in because of the wall in the back of the house I loved seeing the world again! I was glad I wasn’t driving so I could keep my face to the glass and just drink up the scenes that were before me! I have always loved trees and to see so many tall and beautiful pines covering the mountainsides raised my spirit out of the void it had been in for so long! We drove along the Snake River and saw many rafts full of people gliding down the river enjoying the scenery without the noise of traffic and cars. I was envious! When we pulled into the motel in Jackson and got out of the car we were introduced to air that was clean and smelled of fresh pine! I could so pick up everything and move here!

We had a special visit with Carma Lee whom is spending some time in a convalescence center and is at this time unable to leave her bed. She has a huge window near her bed so that she can see the mountainside. Unfortunately that particular mountainside did not have many trees! I felt so bad that she couldn’t leave her room and go out to enjoy the awesome environment that surrounded her. At the end of her hallway they had an area for the patients to go where they could sit and look out the windows that were all the way around the room. They had binoculars that you could look through towards the Grand Teton Mountains and Yellowstone! It was awesome!

When my brother-in-law Richard came up from Star Valley to see us in Carma Lee’s room, he wanted to take us to lunch and we had a nice visit with him. We talked a lot about our trip to Yellowstone that I had gone on with them when I was 18. He talked about living in Star Valley and that their home is part log home and it is nestled next to the mountain. ENVIOUS!! I have always wanted a log home nestled next to a mountain! Then he began talking about my next -There should be a law against! –WINTER!

After hearing that winter up there goes from October into June and getting 4+ feet of snow is normal, my desires to live up there waned! Maybe it would be cool to have a summer home there!! LOL As a child I didn’t mind winter. We would go out and make bunny trails and chase each other around for hours! We would make snowmen and snow angels and then mess them all up afterwards! Once my brother Steve decided he wanted to make a snowman that was higher than the house. We had to use a ladder but we were able to make the tallest snowman in the neighborhood! It was that same brother Steve that decided one winter that it wasn’t cool to have the snow in the front yard all messed up. Smooth snow looked better! Wow, really!! So we were forced to stay in the backyard to play!

As an adult winter is just plain annoying! Unless of course you are into winter sports, which I am not. Winter is-Cold, brown (when it’s not white), ugly black snow at the sides of the roads, slippery, dangerous and depressing! Every winter I think “this winter I am going to find a way to enjoy it!” But I have yet to find a way! Guess I will have to take up Snowboarding! Can’t you just visualize that one! Ha Ha!

Law # 2 Falling Apart

If you have spent any time around me lately you probably have picked up on the fact that I am in perfect denial concerning my law #2. It is something that gnaws at me and I am reminded of every moment of everyday! There should be a law against - your body falling apart just because you are getting older! Ha Ha Bruce! You guessed it! Now, I have no problem with getting older. I like that I have a little more wisdom than I did in my youth. I no longer have to do something stupid to prove my worth as a human being. I was trying to think when I did something stupid when I was young but couldn't come up with anything!! Oh yeah! Ha Ha I just thought of something but there is no way I am going to put it on here! LOL So...anyway...back to falling apart! This idea has been brought more to mind than ever the last two years as I watched the people most special to me fall apart and in two cases leave this earth.
My father was a man that worked all his life in physically demanding jobs. During my life time he worked for a flooring company laying linolium and tile floors in homes and businesses. When I was in 3rd grade they built a new wing onto our school and he was there laying tile for a week. It was fun to have him there with me at school. Even tho I couldn't go talk to him. We would see each other and smile and that was enough! Later he worked for the Murray City Streets department building roads and driving truck. He was in very good condition physically. After retirement and as he approached his 80's it was hard to watch him gradually begin to fall apart physically to the point that he could no longer take care of himself. He died in the hospital from pumonia (who can spell that?!) caused from a broken hip at age 86. I still do not know the reason for this. It does not make sense to me.
So...on to my Mom. If ever there was a woman hard to live up to it was my mom. There wasn't anything she couldn't do! At least in my eyes! Artist, Song writer, organist, play producer, craftwoman, gardner, geneologist, on and on and on! When I was around 10 years old I guess, my mom arranged for the piano, two pianos actually, of music from Sound of Music, and Thoroughly Modern Millie. We would have 4 people playing 2 pianos at the same time. We also danced and had flapper costumes. Fun Times! She was always serving others and had a hard time receiving service! So why does a woman like this get a brain tumor? Why did she have to go thru the horrible things she went thru after the surgery? As fas as I am concerned she stopped being the mom we knew the minute they took the scalpel to her head. She died 5 months later when she put the madness to an end by pulling out the tube in her throat! What is the reason for this? I don't get it.
As a wife you (at least I do) expect that your husband will always be around to take care of you. I am the type that likes to be taken care of! So when something serious happens to him like a stroke at age 52 those feelings of security are shaken up a bit! Thankfully he has recovered and has no serious long term effects from it. So what was the reason for it? I don't know.
Now to me! As a child I was pretty active. I enjoyed being outside playing. Riding my bike and roller skating were amoung my favorite activities. I would skate up and down the sidewalk with my skate key dangling from a string around my neck for hours! I loved the feeling of gliding down the walk with my hair blowing in the wind! (Wow! that was descriptive! LOL) As a teenager I wanted to play tennis really bad but I knew better than to ask for a tennis racket and lessons because there was no money. I finally got me one when I earned enough to buy it myself. I enrolled in a summer community tennis class held at the high school. I loved it! My dream was to play tennis but I was born before girls were encouraged to play sports, into a family that couldn't promote my dream and with a heart murmer that limited my endurance somewhat. So I took some classes at Snow College, played some with Bruce after we got married, then the kids came along and the rackets went somewhere else. When we lived in Vernal and the kids were older we bought each of them a racket for Christmas and began going to the high school several times a week to play tennis. We got pretty good! We had enough of us to play doubles and we would play a couple of sets. It was fun family time and good excercise. But as the kids got older and involved in their own activities the rackets went somewhere else again. The other day Kelly said we should all get the rackets out and play tennis! Yes! Let's do it!! Wait while I run down and put on my ankle and wrist braces and wrap my knee. Oh and don't forget the depends! What? They are all gone?!! Well I guess tennis will have to wait for another day.

Law #1 Stupid People

One of my favorite sayings that I got from my dad (among other sayings!) is "There should be a law against it!" He quoted this a lot and I have figured out that he came up with this for anything he didn't want to do or anything he couldn't change. And because I am my father's daughter the same goes pretty much for me as well. 1.There should be a law against stupid people! I have this thing where I like to get up in the morning, get my bowl of shredded wheat squares with a banana and milk, go to the computer and check up on my fav sites. Facebook, national and entertainment news, local news, followed by my favorite- ATP Mens Tennis. (Sometimes I check up on the womens tennis, but mostly I want to know what Roger Federer is doing! LOL) Anyway, I always check these things in that order! (Humm...OCD maybe?) I read the news stories and the comments people make and it never ceases to amaze me what people will do! THIS WORLD IS GOING TO DUMB ITSELF TO DEATH!! (I stole that from Brucie! ha ha!) I tell myself that I will not look at the news sites anymore, but there I am back the next day checking them out!! There should be a law against that too!! LOL I made the mistake one day of clicking on the comments people made on a news story! MISTAKE!! Do people really think anymore? Is there any common sense out there anymore? Do they not have anything better to do than to make their stupid comments on these news stories?! Don't I have anything better to do than to read them?!! There should be a law against it! I am doing better tho. I only checked out the comments on one story this morning! And I only read a few. :-) Enough ranting on against the law #1. Tune in later for #2!
